My first post!
Hi everyone, My name is Jonathan Kotyk and I am a racecar driver. I will be publishing blog posts giving you an inside look at my racing journey. This past weekend, I had the opportunity to race at the Indianapolis motor speedway in the scca runoffs. i was competing in the ff category which is know as formula ford. This was the SCCa's major national event so many drivers were in attendance. Monday through Thursday was qualifying where drivers like myself had eighteen minutes a day to set out fastest lap. then the overall fast times from the qualifying secession's determined the starting order for Fridays 40 minute main event. Monday was my first time on track and as on track with over 70 cars. I was able to set the third fastest time in my group while passing other cars on track. this was good because i would have a good qualifying position for the main event as long as no other drivers went faster throughout the week. we had a good starting point and now it was time to work on making the car faster and improving our position.
On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to step away from indy and test a usf 2000 car at autobahn country club. it is amazing how much corner speed you can carry into the corners because of the down force. This was a great experience and will definitely help me into the future.
After a successful test Tuesday, I returned to indy Wednesday for my next round of qualifying. An unfortunate accident between a few drivers early in the secession led to the black flag coming out. This meant the run was cut short and no one was able to put in a fast lap. Thursday was similar to Wednesday as a driver dropped oil early on causing the track to become very loose. I missed out on setting a faster as the driver that dropped the oil was directly in front of me so i missed out on setting a faster lap and i fell to eights on the grid.
Friday came and it was time for the main event. starting eights, i was not worried. i knew we had a good car and that my driving needed to be precise if i was to catch the leaders. within the first 5 laps of the race i was able to drive my way up to 3rd and as that happened a yellow flag came out. this worked into my favor because it reduced the gap to the leaders. after the green flag flew i drove my way up to the lead. over the next few laps, the top three fought hard trading places every lap. in the end i was able to finish 3rd with fast lap. it was good to help my teammate bring home the win and for the team to have two cars on the podium.
Following the race at indy, I have had the opportunity to do some high performance simulator training a race Craft 1. Working with my instructor Kelly, he was able to help refine my skills and teach me some new driving techniques. It has been a lot of fun running simulations especially in the rain. if you are ever looking for driver training i highly recommend checking out race craft 1. I've had an awesome time so far and can't thank everyone enough who has helped me out so far. I'll be posting my next blog in a few days and hope you stay tuned to check it out.
